We are just being lazy and relaxing on the counch this evening. The final installment of Food Network's Last Cake Standing is going to come on in about 15 minutes. We've gotten strangely addicted to the cake challenges on Food Network.

I am grievously late planting my vegetable garden this year. I should have planted back in March. But truthfully, I am considering not even planting this year. The problem is the squirrels. They are extremely prolific in our neighborhood and tend to dig incessantly in my garden. It drives me crazy and is a great waste of plants since the digging damages the roots and kills the plants. I have tried all sorts of remedies for this problem but nothing seems to work.

We did plant ten Queen Palm trees in our back yard recently. So far they are thriving. These trees are presently about 5 feet tall but according to the species guide, they can grow up to 50 feet.

Here is a viewing of a couple of our palms now:

Not much going on today. I've been feeling kind of down. I can't pinpoint a reason. I'm sure I'll pull myself out of it. This happens every so often. I just have a "down" day. Nothing that a new pair of shoes can't readily solve, he he.

On a brighter note, the weather was absolutely beautiful. After a stormy, rainy weekend, we had our typical blue skies/hot Texas day today. I didn't get outside much since I was primarily stuck in the office. But there is no reason for me to be stuck in the office. Sometimes I should just take my laptop and work on the back patio. Or go to the coffeeshop and sit at a sidewalk table. Perhaps I will do that tomorrow.

We were driving to church this morning and while crossing the old bridge over the Brazos River in Brazoria I happened to glance down to my right. The river water is running high because of recent heavy rains. There was quite a bit of debris on the rapidly moving muddy water and the river is fairly wide in this spot.

But what caught my eye was a perfectly poised whooping crane perched on a log in the middle of the river. The log was floating downstream with the current and the crane was just along for the ride it seemed.

I have been brought down by migraine headaches two days in a row this week. I believe that I am finally recovered today. I am one of those lucky people who spent the vast majority of my life headache-free. The only kind of headaches I ever had were these 10-second headaches that started at my forehead and moved back across my head. They were extremely painful but only lasted about 10 seconds.

Then a couple of years ago something changed. I had a migraine and didn't know what was going on. My head was really hurting and I was nauseated. This went on most of an afternoon and somehow I guess I slept it off that night. Since then, the migraines have been happening every couple of months.

If you doing nothing else today, please watch this short video clip. It will amaze you. Quite simply, it brought tears to my eyes.

Yesterday we spent part of the day in Houston, shopping and having lunch. Here is Toot enjoying her Greek salad at our favorite Greek restaurant on Montrose.

And here is Tiffany, on the phone as usual. She is very popular and barely has time to eat and sleep in between phone calls and texting sessions.

And then we have Sonja who looks remarkably well despite the fact that she has only gotten about 3 hours total sleep in the past four days.

My daughter made these cupcakes today with a little help from me. I baked the cupcakes, iced them with a plain white icing base, and I rolled out the colored fondant. Then Toot shaped the blankets for this "slumber party" set of cupcakes. The "pillows" are made of marshmallows and the heads are vanilla wafers. She even included little teddy bears for each of the sleeping characters.

Two of my best friends from high school are here visiting for a long weekend. We've already spent several hours laughing because that is what we seem to do when we are together. Now let's see how the rest of their visit turns out. Hint: it will probably be pretty crazy. I will update as often as possible.
