Travelling

We spent this past weekend in College Station, Texas. As usual, I am posting a view from my hotel room taken in the very early morning hours on Sunday:

In other travel news, many people may have noticed that states are closing down highway rest areas right and left. MSNBC has addressed that very issue in a recent article.

Basically, in order to save money in their budgets, states have been closing down rest areas and telling folks to use fast food restaurant and gas station facilities. But as a frequent traveller, I say that none of these options is very good. Rest area bathrooms are really not that clean. And neither are fast food restaurant or gas station bathrooms. With the exception of our local Buc-ee's chain, gas stations essentially don't want people using their rest rooms or else they would equip them with toilet paper and clean them more often.

Buc-ee's has the right idea about it: they have very nice clean restrooms. People stop there to use their facilities and end up spending money there on gas and food.

I have found that when we are travelling the best places to stop are Cracker Barrel restaurants and, believe it or not, large truck stops like the Flying J truckstops. These truck stops make sure they have great facilities and these facilities are not limited to truckers. So by-pass those filthy McDonald's restrooms and stop at Cracker Barrels or truckstops.
